Daytona Beach Vacations

You may have thought that Daytona beach vacations are only suitable for people who are into car racing. On the whole this may be true, but there is more to the Daytona aera than just cars...

The Daytona area proudly calls itself the 'most famous beach vacation in the world' - there's nothing like blowing your own trumpet, although unlike many other beach areas around the world, the name does conjure up a vivid image, one of cars.

The hard packed sand started seeing cars racing way back in the early 1900s, with speeds coming just under 60 miles and hour - way back in those days this was considered a dangerously fast speed! Can you imagine the hullabaloo when Malcolm Campbell set the land speed record in 1935 at an insane 276 miles per hour! This was over 70 years ago, and all on a beach!

The solid nature of the sand is what attracted the racers, and the local interest of Nascar developed from that into the massive national sporting world famous event that it is today, with the Daytona International Speedway still doing a rip roaring trade.

You can still drive a tour car on the beach, but only up to a not so impressive top speed of 10 miles an hour - a nostalgic fun run more than anything else!

With an impressive 23 miles of beach and only 5 miles excluded from motor vehicles, you may well think there's no point in going without a car interest, but in fact that's not strictly true. That same hardpacked sand which drew the racers is the most wonerous white color, and you can quit easily sit and enjoy all the usual beach activities, whether that's a romantic stroll or playing frisbee or volleyball with the kids.

About an hour away there's a huge list of theme centres to visit, like the Kennedy Space Center to Disney to Universal and MGM Studios.

With this kind of location being close to major attractions, plus its' own unique appeal, this keeps Daytona not just the sole preserve of the oil heads! The 5 mile stretch of 'people only' beach is a huge distance, and much more than many beach locations have in total, so don't let that put you off.

You could also book into a hotel by the beach, drive to a day packed full of adventure at one of the local attractions and then relax in the evening as the waves lap onto to the white sand. If that sounds ideal to you then you are not alone, and it explains somewhat why Daytona beach vacations are always popular.
